Have you heard of “burying the Alleluia” before Lent begins?
The word “Alleluia” is an expression of joy which is why it is dropped from the liturgy completely during Lent, until the Easter vigil.
Prior to Ash Wednesday, print out this FREE coloring page for your children to color, paint, or decorate as they see fit. As a family, you can then head out to the backyard, sing an alleluia hymn. Then proceed to roll up your Alleluia coloring page(s), place it in a gallon size ziplock bag or a box, say a prayer of farewell and bury it!
Note: In earlier eras, the burial of the Alleluia was done on the eve of Septuagesima Sunday, the ninth Sunday before Easter. This marks the three week period of pre-Lent preparation prior to Ash Wednesday.
We wanted to offer this FREE coloring page to enjoy with your children before lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 22nd. You can right lick the image above and save the PNG file or you can down the PDF below to print out.

Physical Alleluia to bury

If you want a physical Alleluia to bury, I recommend the wooden Alleluia sign with stand from Catholic All Year Market as seen in the Catholic All Year at Home series on Formed.org.
