Apple Unit Study Ideas & Must-Haves

Unit studies provide numerous benefits for homeschooling families, and an example using the theme of apples illustrates these advantages. When homeschooling with a focus on apples, students can explore various subjects in a cohesive manner. For instance, they can delve into the history of apple cultivation, discovering how apples evolved from wild fruits to the diverse varieties we have today. Simultaneously, they can learn about the science behind apple growth, covering topics such as pollination, photosynthesis, and genetics. Integrating literature into the unit, children can read classic apple-themed stories like “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein, enhancing their language skills while staying immersed in the subject.

Furthermore, unit studies offer flexibility tailored to each child’s interests and abilities. Younger children can engage in hands-on activities like apple themed sensory activities, while older ones might tackle more complex tasks such as researching the nutritional benefits of apples or studying the apple industry’s economics, or baking an apple pie.
This approach to homeschooling accommodates the diverse needs of homeschooling families, fostering a love for learning and allowing each child to explore their passions. Ultimately, unit studies like the one centered on apples encourage an interdisciplinary approach that not only enhances knowledge but also promotes critical thinking and problem-solving skills in an engaging and personalized manner. Just one of the many reasons why we love unit studies!

Treehouse Schoolhouse
Autumn Nature Study
Treehouse Nature Study is a seasonal nature study curriculum designed with family-style learning in mind. It is a gentle guide meant to invite various ages to connect with each other and the world around them through living books, nature notebooking, hands-on projects, and beauty subjects such as poetry, picture study, and folk songs.
From preschool through upper middle school, it appeals to every age and is easily used with multiple ages at the same time.
It would be a great fit for your preschool or kindergartener’s core curriculum or your whole family’s home education Morning Time and Nature Study. It also provides supplemental work for your children’s language arts through poetry memorization, recitation, copywork, and notebooking.

Pro Tips:

spelling & handwriting
Spelling and handwriting practice is incorporated in Treehouse Schoolhouse Nature Studies already, but if you want to add an extra element for your child, here are a few ideas!

Our Favorite
Chalkboards
Chalkboards are great for little hands! From ages 3 and up you can incorporate chalkboards into any lesson for spelling, handwriting, and even math practice.
Our Favorite
Dry Erase Boards
We also love dry erase boards and use them almost daily in our homeschooling for spelling, handwriting, math, and so much more. Our favorite for daily use is the Personal Dry Erase Board. We also like the Prewriting Board, Copywork Board, and so many others.
Adding in Math!
Sometimes you can incorporate math into your unit study and skip your math curriculum all together. This gives kids a chance to use the skills they have already learned or even an opportunity incorporate their math skills in real life situations like measurements for a recipe, conversions, fractions, and more.
For our apple unit studies, I usually incorporated elements from Stephanie Hathaway Apple Unit Study Bundle. Her printables are absolutely amazing and some of my favorite. I use them in addition to Treehouse Schoolhouse or when I want to design my own unit study on something Treehouse Schoolhouse doesn’t cover, then we use Stephanie Hathaway products. They are both staples in my homeschooling when it comes to unit studies.
